Nîmes, City of Gods

8, 9, 11, 12, 13 and 15 August 2022

Nîmes, city of men, myths and gods

Antiquity began in the south of France with the union of a Gallic woman and a Greek man. From this marriage with civilisation, the fantastic city of Nîmes was born. Crossing the dangers of time, under the benevolent patronage of its tutelary god Namas, the city of the Antonines travels towards eternity. In this odyssey, where the civilizations of antiquity and their respective pantheons clash, it is Mercury who comes to the rescue of the Volscians, threatened by Wotan, the lord of the Teutons. And like Cleopatra, the greatest queen of Egypt, Isis bows down to the greatness of the god Augustus and his legions.

It is with the stones of its monuments that Nîmes writes this unique story, a story that transports us from the banks of the Rhône to the Egyptian coast, from Rome the eternal city to the banks of the Rhine. And it is the mythical tale of these men, adventurers and builders, that will be told to you. These men who made Nîmes the city of the gods.

Built around a sacred spring, Nîmes is a 2000-year-old Roman city, but other peoples have left their mark on southern Gaul. The Greeks, Celts, Germans and Egyptians have also contributed to the history of this illustrious city. These different civilisations all had their own gods.

Over the centuries, Dionysus, Namas, Wotan, Jupiter and Isis have conversed with mankind, allied themselves with each other or opposed each other. In the prestigious setting of the Nîmes arena, more than two hundred extras, actors, acrobats, innovative special effects, video mapping and sumptuous sets take you into the magic of ancient mythologies and take you on a journey through time through an extraordinary production.
