The Construction of the Galleys

Our Galleys are self-propelled show machines, propelled by a manitou-type lifting gear. The propulsion unit is attached to the rigid welded structure that makes up the body of the Galley by a single axis. This allows it to negotiate slopes of up to 6%, despite a ground clearance of 20 cm. A front axle with hydraulic steering allows manoeuvrability suitable for arenas, and can imitate the movements of boats.
The lower deck provides space for approximately 15 personnel for stage appearances.
In the lower deck, a linkage system operated by a technician allows all 7 side oars to be moved.
The upper deck can accommodate about twenty re-enactors. The removable mast allows the crossing of high obstacles. The guardrail allows the re-enactors' shields to be hung on. It is possible to install a raven for boarding scenes.
The total overall size of the galleys presented is 15.5 m long, 3.2 metres wide, 3.6 metres high without the mast, and 7 m high once the mast is raised.
